Muay Thai

Muay Thai or Thai Boxing is a Martial Art which originates from Thailand. Known as the "Art of 8 Limbs" it incorporates use of fists, elbows, knees and shins. Used in the past during warfare, today it is practised as a combat sport and is one of Thailands national sports. Made famous by it's effectiveness in both self defence and fitness, it's a very beneficial art to practice. This is great for anyone looking to improve stamina, reduce fat, improve muscle tone or looking to build confidence.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu / Submission Grappling
What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or BJJ as it is commonly known? It is derived from Judo which was developed by Jigro kano. In the beginning, Judo was a predominantly stand up art and revolved mainly around throwing an opponent to the ground and controlling them. Judo placed a major emphasis on open sparring or (Randori) which is what gave Judo the edge over other martial arts in that time period.
Around the late 1880's Judo was put to the test by a man named Matemon Tanabe, this man was the headmaster of a jiu-jitsu style, the Fusen Ryu. The Fusen Ryu was a style that focused on ground techniques and specialised at fighting on the ground. During a match between Kodokan fighters and Fusen Ryu fighters, the Kodokan were taken to the ground and submitted quickly.
At this point in the evolution of Judo it was a predominantly stand up art and after the match, Jigro invited Matemon to teach the grappling techniques to the Kodokan. It was around this time that a student named Mitsuyo Maeda began his training.
Mitsuyo Madea was the man that would eventually bring this style of fighting to Brazil. Mitsuyo originally studied classical jiu-jitsu and later studied Judo where he quickly became one of the best. Mitsuyo was sent to America and eventually ended up in Brazil.
Mitsuyo opened a jiu-jitsu academy in Brazil, and it was here that the original founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Carlos Gracie began his training. After years of training, Carlos opened his own academy.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is revolved around taking your opponent down, controlling and submitting. Different techniques are involved such as armbars, leg locks, chokes, shoulder locks and ankle locks.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a sport that is great for all ages, fun and can help people develop strength, coordination and discipline, and more importantly you will also develop deep friendships that will last a lifetime.
